Context
Recent projects have two constituents, the first being a mixed media montage of found or collected objects and ephemera on board, burlap or in a display case; the second being an edition of prints which are intimately connected to the first. The montage, which I call 'the Object', describes a place, actual or imagined, psychological or physical. Prints take form at any stage in the construction of this object. They become samples or outposts, remote yet connected to their source. The 10cm square is an interpretive device. It is part of a 1 metre square grid used by biologists and archaeologists to record data and represents a way of making sense of something. Yearly, winter trips to the Cairngorms pose interpretive problems. How do I describe a complex system like the Red Hills? This is one of my major ongoing projects.Stuart Harvey

Career: Graphic Designer 1986-94 for organisations in Scarborough and Leeds, designing and illustrating a wide range of corporate and information based full colour printed media and signs using traditional tools and up to the minute IT. I was privileged to work with teams of specialists, designers and printers who expected involvement in all stages of the production process from setting out briefs with ‘blue chip’ clients to producing visuals, finished art work and film for litho plates and screen stencils.

Full time study1994-98 in Leeds and London changing from graphic to fine art. Exhibited regularly through this period at public galleries in London, Leeds and Falmouth, volunteering where I could to participate in education or gallery assistant roles. My degree specialisms were etching and lithography themed around concepts of myth and landscape on which I wrote my thesis. A large proportion of the course involved personal time management, research towards written papers, organisation of events, workshops, lectures and seminars. I was a representative on the student council and helped out as a teaching assistant.

1996-2003 My hobby of walking and climbing enabled me to work in outdoor equipment shops in Kingston Upon Thames and Leeds whilst I pursued a career as an artist printmaker. I managed to exhibit work in a number of cafes, shops and hospitals.

Oct 2004-present Associate Lecturer and Technician at Leeds College of Art & Design’s printmaking facility at Vernon Street, teaching acrylic resist and photo etching, relief and photo screen printing up to degree level. I also run two OCN evening classes for adults in printmaking per week whilst continuing to work towards a full body of my own contemporary art objects along themes of psychological and actual place. Have exhibited at three locations in Leeds in 2005. Also continue to work part time at Backcountry UK Ltd, Ilkley as a technical sales advisor.
